Description
The BK Crag aka Skyhaven Quarry is a former quarry that started seeing routes in April 2022 after a group of Atlanta based climbers known to many as the “Cool Climbers Club” returned from a yearly pilgrimage to Indian Creek. The yearning to continue to wake up next to a crag led to some relentless google searching which led to “Skyhaven Quarry.” The history of the quarry is unknown to me at the time of publishing and developers have just announced a mega project for the area to make it look like every other hideous new development in the area. At the time we started putting up routes the area was beautiful, wooded, and trashed, in a sort of perfect wasteland well known to all who call Atlanta home. The area is littered with tires, mattresses, old rusting machinery, and english ivy for days. Beautiful and trashed: a true Atlanta crag.
I would be remiss to not mention that this crag was developed amidst a struggle just around the corner, a movement to save a forest, block a police training facility, and stop the expansion of a movie studio. The movement has come to be known by the slogans “Defend the Atlanta Forest,” and “Stop Cop City.” This struggle has shown us that these beautiful wastelands, deemed disposable by the city and those in power, are often the places where people like us can find freedom. The future of this particular area looks bleak as developers close in on it, but its exploration is a result of a lesson learned from the defend the forest struggle, that their wastelands are our spaces for experimentation and joy.
The only history we were able to dig up on climbing in the area was from a neighbor girl who lives right behind the crag. One day she stumbled upon us clearing ivy off the rock dangling from a tree and said that she had heard from her dad that people had done something similar before…
Great place to teach someone to climb, great date spot, great dumping spot, great place to get a face full of dirt or poison ivy! The crag floods after rain. All climbs top out.
