Description
Bear Mountain(s) (there are actually two Bear Mountains side by side) is located in the middle/more northern section of Wendell State Forest east and northeast of Farley Rd. This area can best be accessed by Bear Mountain Road. The hillsides are littered with ledge and boulders, some of which have been climbed and documented, some of which have been climbed and forgotten, and many that likely have not. Much of the main cliff line on the mountain is either too broken, too short to put in routes, or too tall/with bad landings to boulder, but there is a lot to explore. A few small waves of climbers have ventured into these woods starting in the early 2000s and developed many quality boulders. A few of these are absolute classics and deserved to be climbed more.
Trails in these woods are few and far between, and getting to these boulders will likely require some bushwhacking and a decent sense of direction (or GPS). There is also private land in these woods that should not be trespassed on. Apps such as OnX can be a great resource in determining where property lines are. Please respect them.
These boulders are being included in Mountain Project because they are on State Forest land and can be accessed entirely through State Forest Land.
Getting There
Bear Mountain Road is a good dirt road that steadily climbs off of Farley Rd. There are several areas to park as you drive up the hill. The least committing spots are just on or near Farley road, but require a longer approach. If you venture further up the road, you will find some spots just before the power lines. Please don't block any roads or trails, and be sure to park off the pavement.
