Description
Climbing right by the water? Yes please! There are a handful of sport and trad routes that make for a fun afternoon in Tanote Bay. This is also the starting point for the multipitch routes that link Poseidon with Jah Crag, Layer Cake, and Tanote Pinnacle. You will melt if you try to climb this area in the morning, so you should wait until mid-afternoon to head out here. Be careful if you decide to take a dip in the ocean between climbs because the water is usually choppy and the oysters are sharp.
I recommend buying the Koh Tao Rock Climbing guide from the Rakkup app. The author, Kelsey Gray, included detailed photos of the approach and route topos which would be hard to figure out otherwise.
Getting There
The best approach is to park at Poseidon Resort and walk along the beach. Take the steep drop-off down the Poseidon driveway and park about halfway to the beach near the "Free Parking" sign. Once at the beach, head to the right in front of Mountain Reef Resort and continue to scramble along the rocks for 5-10 minutes. Look for the bolts on "Don't Waste my Paste," the first bolted route you will encounter. During the rainy season or stormy conditions, this area will be inaccessible from the beach and rapelling in from Jah Crag is best.
