Description
The volcanic tuff of the San Luis Valley rises high above the triangular plateau known as Jacob's Hill. The climbing is sustained on cracks and Penitente-esque pockets through slabby, dead vertical, and occasionally overhanging terrain. The routes are safely bolted but airy with demanding climbing above the protection. There is more bouldering potential than routes and more bolted faces than cracks, but lovers of Penitente Canyon will appreciate the 25-30 meters of both traditional and bolt-protected climbing on the sunny, lichen painted Southeast-facing cliff. There are only a few warm-ups, but those solid at 5.12 will be rewarded with classic Valley climbing and stunning views of the Sangre de Cristo Range.
Getting There
From the North: head South on CO 15 from Monte Vista then West on County Road BB towards Terrace Reservoir. Hang a right at the T-intersection onto FDR 255, followed by a quick left (in ~0.4 miles) on an unmarked road (if you drop steeply downhill, you've gone too far). Drive approximately 0.75 miles on the rough road, passing a cattleguard and a National Forest boundary sign. Park on the right at the only flat clearing, which is across from the cairned trailhead.
From the South: from La Jara, leave US 285 heading west on CO 15 past the town of Capulin. Immediately after passing the junkyard, the road will make a 90 degree turn to the North. Turn left to head West on FDR 255 just after this turn. It's approximately 7.3 miles on the dirt road to the unmarked left turn towards Jacob's Hill (if you drop steeply downhill, you've gone too far). Drive approximately 0.75 miles on the unmarked rough road, passing a cattleguard and a National Forest boundary sign. Park on the right at the only flat clearing, which is across from the cairned trailhead. [Note: FDR 255 forks left at a sign marked Jacob's Hill. Disregard this sign, and avoid FDR 252.]
