Description
Perhaps home to the highest concentration of great bouldering in the state forest, The Marsh Caves is made up of a few unique features with quality bouldering. There is a stunning fifty-degree overhung block, a precarious floating block (climb at your own risk), and a deep cave feature. The rock quality is generally very good in this area and the features are aesthetic. Multiple hard projects still remain, likely a couple in the double digits.
Some of the best problems here include: Exodus, V6/7; Portmanteau, V8/9; Diagon Alley, V3; Deadcrush, V3; Breathing Underwater, V3; Float Theory, V1/2; and Water Hazard, V0+.
Getting There
The approach for this area is a bit more involved but from the main parking area is still less than twenty minutes (15-20 minutes depending on pace). Approach as for the "Toprope Walls" hiking northwards on the Mid State Trail coming off the west side of the parking area. Follow this single track trail for roughly 7 minutes over small hills and a stream, veering right on the trail where you cut off straight/left to reach The Toprope Wall. Just after veering right, there should be a faint single track on the left heading uphill. Follow this trail uphill where it will empty onto a large pipeline trail. Follow the pipeline trail for 1-2 minutes where it veers left around a small pond. Continue on the trail over a flat rock, but as the trail break right to reenter onto the pipeline, stay straight/left on a small single track. Follow this trail for 30 meters, and cut left into a small depression. At the end of the depression, there will be a dropoff. Cut through a narrow gully where in the distance you will see a rocky area (which is The Marsh Caves). Move down the gully and straight/left to cut between the marsh and a small, rocky hill. You will emerge with a beautiful, vertical face and an extremely impressive, 50 degree overhang on your right and a mysterious, floating block straight ahead. You've made it. To reach the cave, continue around the floating block and along the edge of the swamp another 50 meters.
