Description
Southwest facing granite wall at 5700 ft elevation. Main face 55 meters tall with slab and steep slab sections, many cracks, and a noteworthy collection of overhangs at the top. Six traditional routes pioneered in 1979 by the Banditos. Rock is characteristically similar to Granite Mountain. Be prepared for a remote and adventurous experience. Much new route potential exists; please craft safe and enjoyable routes.
Getting There
Park at the trailhead for the Granite Mtn Hotshot Memorial on highway 89 2.5 miles south from Yarnell. Alternatively take the shuttle to the trailhead from Yarnell. Hike the memorial trail for 2.6 miles to the upper memorial pavilion. Continue on a contouring trail until it meets the old 4wd mining road (do not follow descending switchback trail to the second memorial site). Follow the road, steep and washed out, past two switchbacks on the north side of the ridge. Once the road crosses over to the south side, go about 1/8 mile and look for cairns crossing a shallow drainage to your left. These cairns mark the climber's trail to the base of the cliff.
History
Originally called Rink's Rock for Glenn Rink who spotted the area and first hiked the long bushwhack approach from the bottom of the road grade. Later developed by Dan Langmade and Stan Mish approaching via bad roads out of Yarnell (currently inaccessible). 6 traditional routes were established by parking at the summit and walking down to the crag. Area has been featured in two guidebooks, both of which indicate a brutal bushwack approach from the bottom. After the tragic loss of the Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew on June 30, 2013, a memorial trail was constructed providing easy access to Yarnell wall for those willing to walk a couple of hours. Access at this state park is currently free, though parking is limited.
Many of the routes were named by Dan Langmade with the Banditos' fancy for Harley Davidson motorcycles in mind.
