Description
Split Rock is a small cluster of boulders located on a hill along the split rock trail at Gay City state park. There are a couple of climbable faces and a handful of beginner friendly lines. While it seems the potential for future projects is fairly limited, the short approach, comfortable top outs, and flat landings make this boulder more than worth checking out for locals in the area.
I came across this boulder because a friend of mine saw someone climbing on it while he was out hiking. When he told me I had to check it out. So I cannot be sure any of the lines I found have not been climbed before. That being said it seems many of the holds I used were left un-cleaned/ un-chalked and so I believe that whoever was here directly before me almost certainly was not using them. I'll add all of the routes I find for completeness but if anyone knows people who have climbed here in the past feel free to reach out. (Will be updating this post soon)
Getting There
Split rock can be found along the red/ yellow trail (also called split rock trail) at Gay City State park. The trail can be accessed a few different ways. During summer it is fastest Parking at the lower lot close to the pond. You can take a right before a small building/ closed concession stand and follow the trail to the right then continue onto the split rock trail. Follow this for a couple of minutes up a small hill and the rock will be in the middle of the trail. In winter you will have to walk up from the lower lot. Follow the road past the entrance booth. To the right there will be a relatively small parking area with a sign/map board. There is a trail entrance by the sign and if you follow this trail a couple of minutes the red/yellow trail will connect to it on the left. Once you are on the red/yellow (split rock) trail the boulder will be more or less straight ahead and only about a minute or so walk away.
