Description
The area around Shoshone Falls presently includes three main crags (from south to north): Gawker Wall, The Midway, and Picnic Crag. All three crags are on the same featured basalt cliff band so moving from one to the next is quite easy. Gawker Wall generally contains harder (mostly 5.10s) and longer climbs and is not a good place for groups, dogs, or kids. Gawker Wall also is closed to climbing from May through September from 10 am to 6 pm. The Midway and Picnic Crag lie just north of Gawker Wall and are a great choice for beginning climbers, groups, kids, etc.
Getting There
Follow directions into the Snake River Canyon, toward Shoshone Falls/Dierkes Lake. A fee booth charges $5 per vehicle (at time of writing) from about mid April through early October. Those on foot, bike, or board are free. Where the road forks, go left toward Shoshone Falls. Park near the "Welcome to Shoshone Falls" sign just after the tight horseshoe turn. Gawker Wall lies along the road just east of this sign. The Midway and Picnic Crag are accessed by a trail heading north from the parking area and sign. Another approach option for Picnic Crag is to park at the boat ramp above Shoshone Falls. Please use and stay on existing trails as much as possible.
