Description
Swallow Crags aka Boy Scout Crags are the obvious set of domes located on the north side of the Boy Scout Road (CR 68C). This is one of the oldest climbing area's in Red Feather Lakes with routes going back to the mid-'80s. It was camp counselors from the Ben Delatour Boy Scout Ranch who pioneered the first climbs at this area. Classics in the area include: Cliff Rose, 10a; The Zen Master's Delight, 9; Creamsicle Crack, 11c; The Manuscript, 12a; Punch Drunk Love, 12a; and Luigi, 11b; among many others.
Getting There
From Livermore, head west on the Red Feather Lakes Road (CR 74E), then turn south/southwest along the Boy Scout Road (CR68C). After about 4 miles, you will reach a gated road on your right with Swallow Crags visible to the north. Park along the road here. Please DO NOT BLOCK THE GATE, and there is a 5 CAR MAX. for this parking area. If there are already 5 cars, please use the Elkhorn Creek Trailhead, and respect the private residence across the street.
From parking, hop the NF gate, and walk north along the old Molly Lake Road/trail. After the road/trail turns west, look for a well-marked climber trail heading up to the cliff. Hiking time is about 25-45 minutes depending on which crag you're heading to.
