Description
Wendell State Forest comprises 7,566 acres of protected land that has miles of trails, streams, ponds, gravel roads, and is littered with rock outcroppings and boulders. Most of the forest can be accessed for free, but the Main Entrance off Wendell Road has a pay area with a beach.
The forest is subdivided into several areas due to the roads that run through it. Rock climbing can be found in the two larger chunks: Jerusalem Road is off Wendell Road behind the Main entrance, and Bear Mountain is off of Farley Road.
Jerusalem Road is very easy to access and has a high concentration of easy and moderate boulders. Bear mountain is a bit more back country, but your efforts in finding it will be rewarded by some high quality problems on amazing gneiss.
A wire brush might be good to have on hand in these area. While these boulders were impeccably cleaned at some point, some have succumbed to partial reclamation by nature.
Getting There
Jerusalem Road:
The easiest entry is through the Wendell State Forest Main Entrance on Ruggles Pond Rd./Laurel Dr. The gates are open seasonally between 9am and 5pm. You can pay and park in the pay lot, or keep driving onto good dirt roads until you reach Jerusalem Rd. There are a couple spots to park along this road. If you opt for parking on the dirt road, be forewarned that the gates are closed at 5pm, and you will need to drive out a different way (see below).
An alternate entrance is though Wickett Pond Rd., which is a good dirt road. This turns into Ruggles Pond Rd./Laurel Dr. and leads to Jerusalem Rd. There are no gates on this road. To venture onto Jerusalem Road, a higher clearance vehicle may be recommended, but is not necessary.
Bear Mountain:
Bear Mountain Road is a good dirt road that steadily climbs off of Farley Rd. There are several areas to park as you drive up the hill. The least committing spots are just on or near Farley road, but require a longer approach. If you venture further up the road you will find some spots just before the power lines. Please don't block any roads or trails and be sure to park off the pavement.
