Description
- ** work in progress -- reorganizing these routes into one area and adding new assents****
Avalanche Pass is home to high quality rock, rich climbing history, and much on going development.
A dramatic mountain pass nestled in the heart of the Eastern High Peaks. The pass is formed by the scared West Face of Mount Colden and the Eastern slopes of Avalanche Mountain. The 5 mile approach helps to keeps the crowds down and requires extra thought for success with these routes. The Pass sits around 3000' in elevation creating an alpine setting. Wind can be quite strong in the pass and weather can move in fast.
There are manny established routes on both sides of the pass and potential for much more.
Getting There
There are several approach options, although most climbers approach from the North. Parking can be found at both Adirondack Loj and S. Meadows. Make the 2.2 mile hike to Marcy Damn. Cross the Bridge over Marcy Brook and head for Avalanche Pass 2 miles up into the pass.
From the height of the pass the cliffs start to come into view as you hike down to the lake the matrix wall will be to the left and the 3d wall/fin ledge to the right.
Climbing in the pass can be done in a day with an early start.
There are camping options and several lean toos one mile 1 mile before the pass and a second set of sites 1/4 mile past the lake. Both serve as solid base camps for climbing in the pass.
