Description
Hazel Hollow was developed with a voluntary partnership between independent route developers and the RRGCC working cooperatively to “pre”-protect the natural and climbing environments. Before publishing or widespread public climbing occurred, environmental protection infrastructures—hardened staging areas, sustainable trails, soil protection, and vegetation buffers—were pre-installed by the Coalition at the developers’ invitation and assistance. This successful joint venture represents a mutual commitment by the RRGCC and the developers to responsible environmental stewardship and strongly urge continued innovative and cooperative projects for future sustainable development.
This climbing area has a short approach, a mixture of sun and shade, and a nice selection of quality moderates, both tall and short. There are about 20 sport routes ranging from 5.5 to 12a, and a handful of moderate trad routes, at this time.
Getting There
Hazel Hollow can be accessed by a trail with a low signpost directly across from the parking area for Chocolate Factory and Motherlode parking lots. The access trail from the parking area switchbacks once before coming to a trail that splits right to the main wall or to the left side.
To access the main wall, stay right at the top of the parking lot access trail when the trail splits. This takes you up a short hill with an on-the-ground wooden ladder. Immediately to the left are the two short moderate sport routes—Hazelnut Child (5.6) and Hazelnut Fairy (5.5)—and a couple of trad routes with a well-built, rock wall staging area at their base. To the right are the rest of the routes of the main wall.
The routes on the left wall are best reached by using the main trail to the left where the access trail from the parking area bisects an old logging road that runs parallel to the cliff line. Follow trail to the left then up a ladder to the staging area for most of the routes; continue around to the left for the remainder.
