Description

Terminal Cancer (a fifty classic ski descent) lies in the middle of a terrific wall carved from the large glaciers that formed Lamoille Canyon long ago. Terminal Cancer formed when a vertical dike eroded away faster than the rock surrounding it, leaving a beautiful gash in an otherwise chossy rock wall that makes for a dream line for any skier. In winter, the main attraction of the Rubies is this couloir, given the extremely easy access (we decided to leave the skins in the car because you practically boot up the line from road), the 3-hour proximity from Salt Lake City, and the aesthetic and fame of the line.

In addition to Terminal Cancer, there is some pretty cool rock and ice climbing to be had on the walls connecting to the couloir. Lots more exploration could be done in this area for multipitch rock routes and some fun alpine ridge routes above the top of TC.

*Note**. This road is sometimes littered with rockfall. Be wary of any rocks on the road, and wear a helmet while recreating in Lamoille canyon. This is a relatively untrafficked place to climb, and there is loose rock abound. If you are looking for adventure climbing, you will find it in Lamoille Canyon!

Getting There

Drive down Lamoille Canyon past Camp Lamoille. Terminal Cancer will appear on the right side of the road and take your breathe away with its beauty and aesthetic. If you end up at Thomas Campground, you've gone too far. Park on the side of the road anywhere, in view or slightly past TC. Cross the river wherever is most convenient, and head on up!

In winter, the road may or may not be clear enough to drive all the way to the wall. Mostly it seems that it is clear, but in the event that it is not, a quick skin/walk up the road will take you right to the line.
