Description
A large (~500m technical, 1000m total gain) NW face on the south side of Hwy 58, with a number of interesting couloirs. It's actually very hard to see from the highway, affording only a brief glimpse of the upper half of the face through the trees while driving eastbound.
The railway tunnels directly through the mountain for nearly a mile. Besides the surreal rumble of a train passing underfoot, it maintains the feeling of being deep in the wilderness.
Easy access alpine terrain, reliable ice, maybe some decent quality rock, and super-steep ski/board descents when in shape. Significant terrain traps for avalanche, but mostly steep enough to self-purge during storm.
All below treeline, but doesn't get much sun. Will hold tons of ice in even a mild cold snap, probably almost every season. Fuji offers some similar terrain, but gets extensive sun and ice will probably last hours rather than weeks.
Some pitons in the walls make it seem like there is extensive climbing history. Likely first snowboard descent of the main/left couloir by Lee Baker with one rappel circa 2005. When filled in well this ice cliff could be aired in a ~30ft drop with a tight but plausibly sane landing and runout.
