Description Suggest change

This is the small crag across Big Cottonwood Creek and slightly upcanyon from the large parking area for the Higher Education Area. The crag is being posted here as “Forsaken Wall” as a placeholder in case the crag’s original developers – more on that below – have already named it. Forsaken Wall is several hundred yards east of the Resurrection Area that reportedly is closed to climbing because it is on private land. Having eyeballed various on-line resources, I’m pretty sure Forsaken Wall is on public land, but I stand to be corrected.

There were three existing bolted lines on the crag when we first forded the creek awhile back on a recon. All the bolts on the three routes are plated 3/8” studs and appear to be 15-20 years old, but generally in good shape. None of the lines are described in existing guidebooks or customary on-line sources, so they are given temporary names here until someone speaks up. Another route has since been added, Puppet on a Broken String, giving the crag its current total of four routes. There is potential for a few more, but they’ll take a lot of cleaning.

Although the crag may appear unattractive, the approach is casual (except for maybe the creek crossing), and the climbing is entertaining enough to warrant a visit if you’re tired of repeating the same’oles elsewhere in BCC or you want to avoid, well, everyone.  In late summer/early fall, most of the crag is in the shade until 1pm so, and it goes back into the shade an hour or two before sunset.

Getting There Suggest change

Park in the large parking lot for the Higher Education Area. You may wish to park your vehicle closer to the road than in the back of the lot to discourage thievery; there is a history here of smash-and-grab. From the far-east edge of the parking area, walk about 150 feet up-canyon and cross the road to Big Cottonwood Creek, well east of the “No Trespassing” signs plastered downstream. The crux, maybe of your whole day, is crossing the creek. In late August through early October I’ve been able to find several places where the ford is less than knee-deep. My guess is that the creek can only be safely crossed from early August to the first heavy snowfall in late fall.

Once across the creek, wander along the creek’s edge for a short distance until cairns can be spotted about 50 feet up the north-facing slope above the creek. These mark the start of a good, switchbacking trail up open slopes just east of the crag to the first route. Five minute approach from the creek.
