Description
This is a massive, glacial erratic boulder propped atop a hill along the Midstate Trail, skirting the border between Spencer and Oakham. The rock itself is about 25 feet tall and probably close to 40 feet across. As for climbs, there are at least 15 unique routes, varying in difficulty level.
Getting There
There are two ways to reach the boulder. You can park on Flint Rd. in Oakham, which is perhaps more of a trail than a road. I would probably recommend 4WD as it's not in great condition. Follow the road about a quarter mile to where it takes a sharp left, and pull off here. You will walk a bit further, following the road to the left (there is a trail that goes straight as well) for about 100 meters, and then make a right on a wide trail. Follow this shortly and up a hill, and you will see the boulder in a small clearing. This approach takes about 2 minutes.
The other option is to park along Browning Pond Road in Spencer. When traveling west, pass the causeway, and park in the pulloff on the right side of the road. You will hike along the pond, and then make a left into the woods, following signage to stay on the Midstate Trail. Walk up a large, twisting hill, and then continue on the trail until you eventually reach an obvious clearing atop a hill with the huge boulder. The total distance is about 1.4 miles but is a great little hike, so if you're spending the day, I actually recommend it!
