Description Suggest change

This entry is mainly for historical sharing. Rock climbing on Kolana rock is probably all X rated due to rock quality. Maybe not….Go at your own discretion.

You can gain the summit of Kolana by the southwest, hiking/climbing easy 3rd class ramps.

There is no trail it’s all cross country bushwacking.

Kolana rock rises about 1,800ft from the water, sheer and soaring out of the reservoir.

There are only two known documented routes on Kolana rock. Maybe for good reason as the rock seems super fractured/vegetated and has been known for massive rock falls. The scaring is evident all over Kolana. You can read about it in an article from 2006 in Climbing by Doug Robinson

Some info can be found in the AAC archives of 1972.

North Face 5.9 A3 Grade V FA: Galen Rowell and Warren Harding 1971

West Face Dihedral 5.8 Grade III(???) FA: John Liebeskind and partner 1984

Getting There Suggest change

Bushwack from the backpackers camp, circumvent the whole rock heading east down steep gullies and wrap around to a massive forest ledge that sits about 200ft above the water.

Entering into the water/reservoir is prohibited.
