Description
The climbing a bit chossy in some areas but it’s free access so I guess you get why you pay for, especially with this limestone. The rock is the remanence of a house built on an unsafe cliff which fell into the lake. The area is pretty popular as boats come by constantly to show their buddies “that’s where the house fell into the lake on the news”. That said you’ll rarely ever find climbers out there just a few cliff divers like the rest of lake Whitney.
Getting There
The best approach, besides obviously a boat, is the Steiner valley ranch turnoff which you should be able to find on google. There’s a good size water tower that says “white bluff” down the side. Drive until a small grass U shaped turn off on your left with a small gate, most of the year it’s a bit grown over so drive slow and it’s pretty obvious. Try to park out of the way and don’t leave trash. Follow the trail to the lake and the lakeshore left to white bluffs. Approach is quick maybe 10-20 depending on your groups hiking speed, it’s an easy hike we’ve brought young children many times. There’s a channel you need to swim so bringing a life jacket or tube is suggested. We normally leave our gear on the shore or bring a dry bag and an inner tube. Nobody messes with your gear you can see it most of the time from the crag.
