Description
The foothills above Reiter Road have a history of bouldering going back 30 years. Climbers visiting Zeke's Wall were the first to find the stunning collection of boulders on the hillside below the cliffs. In 2000, part of the forest was clearcut, leading to greater visibility of the area and the original names for the areas - the lower Clearcut and upper Forest. Today, the forest is regrowing and other parts have been logged. The Reiter Foothills boulders still lie densely packed between two branches of a logging road that is hiked to access.
Originally, the Clearcut, with its huge blocs, was an open sloping field with views to Mt Index and the Olympics, while the Forest offered peaceful climbing under beautiful second-growth. In the last 20 years the Clearcut has become brushy and some of the Forest has been logged, but the boundaries remain the same.
Few FA records have been kept since Greg Collum and Armond de Buque made the first (known) visit to the foothills, so most FAs are kept blank.
A few other boulders are scattered around the logging road used to access, and have been developed recently. Boulders have also come to rest along the trail to Zeke's Wall, but neither have the concentration of the main areas.
Getting There
Park at the Reiter Rd pullout at 2.8 miles from Hwy 2. Head up the trail left to the power lines, then right to the obvious Five Star Boulder. Bushwhack past it uphill on a fairly well-tracked path to soon meet the logging road. This will meet it at the right end of its huge switchback, so follow it left for about .75 miles. At this point you will come to a fork. For the West Forest, take the left fork and follow it up into the woods, eventually you will spot boulders on the right hand side. For the east forest and Clearcut, take the right fork and do the same. The Central forest is in between and can be accessed from either side.
