Description
Griffith Springs is a quiet little hiking trail fifteen minutes from Flagstaff along the 89A. Hosting safe, short and shady moderates. This area is a great primer to outdoor climbing, acting as a potential escape from the more crowded areas. Griffith is located next to a scenic creekbed, and provides a gorgeous view of the forest. Despite the climbing being short in length and not particularly awe-inspiring to look at, those who commit to the five minute approach will be rewarded with a casual climbing day. The surrounding area is arguably the most scenic I’ve seen in Flagstaff; wildflowers, a flowing stream, and massive ponderosas circle the crag.
Most routes range from 30-45 feet tall and are generously bolted with mussy hooks for anchors. As with most new areas, helmets are recommended as the crag cleans up. Those who can't take a little lichen here and there need not apply. There's a decent amount of potential bouldering routes along the river bank. Arguably more lines could exist here than at Buffalo Park with a little love and some brushing.
Getting There
Drive south on 89A approximately two miles past the Flagstaff Airport exit and Fort Tuthill. The Griffith Springs day-use area is signed appropriately and will be on the left (east) side of Highway 89A. Use GPS coordinates found below or type in Griffith Springs Roadside Park into google for the USDA directions.

Off the 89a travel 200 yards down to the Griffith Springs trailhead and park next to the pit toilet. Facing away from the 89a to the left of the campground toilet you'll find the main Griffith Springs trail loop. Hike for .3 miles to a trail intersection and continue straight for another 100 yards on the main trail. Then cut left off-trail and down towards the creekbed. Approximate approach time is 5-10 minutes.
If your confused after cutting off trail, i'd recommend shooting for the GPS pin on the map section of MP as it should only take three minutes from cutting off the trail to reach the crag. For the uninitiated, MP can accurately track where you are without a phone signal in the Map section.
