Merriam Woods Rock Climbing
Merriam Woods is conservation easement that is owned and managed by the Town of Woodstock. Climbing has a long history on the cliffs dotting its southwest sector, an area we have come to call Russell Crags. Recreation, rock climbing included is a legitimate and protected land use. This is this is all because of generosity of the Merriam family who donated the piece of land to be preserved as forested space and to be used and enjoyed by the many.
There is a general management plan in the works for the easement. It's being written by the Woodstock Conservation Commission who is tasked with its management. It's all pretty basic stuff so just bring your proper crag etiquette and you'll be all good.
The Central New Hampshire Climbers Association has been in close contact with the Town of Woodstock and we appreciate their commitment to conservation and their willingness to learn about our favorite activity. It's been a long process but it's been a rewarding one and we look forward to continued partnership.
This is a leave less trace area, so as always pack out whatever you bring in. No camping, fires, drones or speakers. Please no large groups
Right now parking is at the gate, along the side of the road. The parking is on federal land and is currently permitted. Just please be respectful keep the noise down, don't litter and don't block anyone's driveway.
Getting around can be a little bit daunting for the first time Russell explorer. There are maps posted online that are helpful. I would suggest taking the "pink trail" up and down as it's less steep but the "yellow trail" is shorter. Expect trails that are less defined and junctions not clearly marked so just be ready for a little adventure. Once your in the know it's it's pretty easy to get around.
The hike in along the stream is pretty easy then it get steep after that. You could spend up to 45 minutes from the car to main cliff at a moderate pace (if you don't get lost).
