Description
Barnes Butte is located in Prineville, a smaller community about 30 mins east of Redmond or 45 mins northeast of Bend. This area is being explored for potential boulder problems, trad, and sport climbs. Barnes Butte has had a mine dug through it (mostly collapsed and the obvious entrances have been fenced off) and is owned by the city of Prineville. The rock seems to be the same welded tuff as Smith Rock with the occasional choss. The northernmost summit has the largest features and intermixed loose rock, while the southernmost summit has granite like rock with shorter features.
Getting There
Once you are in Prineville, head east on NE Combs Flat Rd, and the main parking lot is at the end of it (a little more then a mile from hw26 (3rd St)). If you are unfamiliar with Prineville, drive past Barnes Butte Elementary School (north bound) on a dirt road into the parking lot.
The hike starts from the parking lot and will depend on where you want to go in the area. Longest approach so far is a 30 min hike from the parking lot (2 miles).
