Carousel Butte

Utah > Southeast Utah > Lockhart Basin
Warning Access Issue: RAIN, WET ROCK and RAPTOR CLOSURES: The sandstone around Moab is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Also please ask and be aware of Raptor Closures in areas such as CAT WALL and RESERVOIR WALL in Indian Creek DetailsDrop down

Description

With Wingate towering over 300 feet to the summit, Carousel Butte is the distinctive butte above the Dripping Spring Basin north of Lockhart Basin. A long approach and the lack of routes will certainly guarantee solitude.

Getting There

A high-clearance/4X4 vehicle is highly recommended to reach Carousel Butte. Follow the Kane Creek road up and over Hurrah Pass until reaching the poorly signed road junction for Dripping Spring Basin (~4.2 miles from the summit of Hurrah Pass). This is also the turn for the Wind Caves. Carousel Butte is obvious from this junction. Turn left where the road progressively becomes significantly rougher. We were able to drive ~1.5 miles before the road became too rough (parking at 38.4428, -109.6505). A modified 4X4 would be required beyond 1.5 miles.
