Malpaís Rock Climbing

Take into consideration its an ocean-side crag!

For lower humidity levels in the air, low tide is the best time to go.
That said, one third of the routes are tide dependent for belaying. Only accesible at low tide.
The rest of the routes can be climbed during hi-tide. 

It is better climbing in the morning before 10am or after 3pm when the sun is less intense.
Otherwise sunscreen is advisable from 11am onwards. 

Wearing tennis shoes is best for access and belaying.
Sandals to belay in is not advisable as its quite irregular grounds and sometimes sharp to stand on.
Some belay areas towards the sea have minute tide pools sprinkled around, its a good idea to bring a waterproof bag to place the rope and keep it relatively dry in these areas.

ALWAYS spot your climbing partner before they clip the first bolt.
ALWAYS pre-clip the first bolt if you have the chance to.
ALWAYS wear a helmet if belaying or standing around close to the walls.
BEWARE of rope friction on sharp edges when lowering. Slow lowering advisable.
There can always be surprise rockfall or broken holds. Take into consideration his is a very new crag with low traffic.

Remember the crag is next to Costa Ricas first National Park, this means wildlife here is abundant and should be respected.
Please carry all your trash out and if you have a chance and take any marine trash you might encounter, making it an even nicer place for all of us.
