Description
Fire and Blood Crag is a south-facing crag located high above the East Fork of the San Juan River. The crag is unique in the Pagosa area, because it is composed of a very high quality, fine grained, light brown welded tuff with little or no impurities.
Getting There
To reach the crag, drive 1.85 miles on the East Fork Road from the pavement of US Highway 160. Check with the Pagosa Ranger District to see if the road is open. It is generally closed Dec. to April / May. Before you reach 1.85 miles on the East Fork Road, you will notice that you are driving through an area of blasted rock (the East Fork Narrows). The approach gully (at 1.85 miles) is the first drainage after the narrows that reaches the road (from the north) and doesn't end at a cliff or long steep dirt slope above the road. The gully starts with a short bit of super steep dirt. About 200' up the gully (and visible from the road) is a rock band, 20' high, that appears to block easy access. Easy 3rd Class on the left side of the rock band (best way up) or super steep dirt that is right of the rock band (best way down) give access to the drainage above. Go up the drainage for 20 to 25 minutes. The drainage is generally open forest and gets less steep as you go up. The crag is above the drainage on the right (east) and can be recognized by its uniform brown color and visible bolts.
