Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closures ***** RAIN AND WET ROCK ***** The sandstone in Zion is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN ZION during or after rain. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby. Description

Northgate Peak East is a formation of solidified white sand, as are nearby neighbors Northgate Peak West and North Guardian Angel. Common to these peaks, and others in and outside the park boundaries, are the checkerboard patterns from the layered sand (horizontal) and the numerous water runnels (vertical).

Getting There

Follow Kolob Terrace Rd to the Wild Cat Canyon Trailhead.

Hike for 0.9 miles, then turn right toward the North Guardian Angel Overlook.

After another 0.9 miles you will arrive at a basalt peninsula with the North Guardian Angel in front of you, the Northgate Peak East to your left, and the Northgate Peak West to your right.

This is the same approach as for North Guardian Angel.
