Description
An unassuming peak just west of, and dwarfed by, Mt Conness. The eastern face of this mountain has a number of buttresses with quality granite and good route potential. At the time of writing, there are still plenty of lines open.
Getting There
The target is the north end of Roosevelt Lake, just north of Conness Meadows and below the North Ridge of Mt Conness. There are three ways to approach this area:
1. Via Young Lakes from Tuolumne Meadows, the way you normally would to get to Conness Meadows and the West Ridge or SW Face of Mt Conness (if approaching from Yosemite). This approach has the merit of gaining the least pointless amount of elevation, as you do not lose much elevation on your approach (though you still gain plenty). Roughly 8 miles (6 mi on trail and 2 mi cross country)
2. Via the N Ridge of Mt Conness notch. Approach from Saddlebag Lake as you would for climbing the N Ridge of Mt Conness. Instead of climbing the ridge, descend down 4th class slabs on the west side of the notch to Roosevelt Lake. You gain ~1500' and lose ~1300' going down to the lake but this is likely the most direct route.
3. Via the 4th class chute used for the approach to the W Ridge or SW Face of Mt Conness. Leave following the trail from Sawmill Campground and follow the approach directions for the W Ridge or SW Face of Mt Conness. Hike past the SW Face of Conness to Roosevelt Lake. You gain ~2300' and lose ~2000' by this route (ouch).
