Description Suggest change

The northeast quadrant of Walnut Mountain has a number of difficult, technical mountain bike trails but there doesn’t appear to be any previous climbing history here (prior to late 2020). The CT state geologist report mentioned here (plus the “pink granite maze” area) as having some of the best examples of the relatively rare and super high quality “pink granitic gneiss”

There are definitely at least a few classic problems out here, and some gnarly multi-tier roof climbs. Access is legal.  Watch out for and be respectful to mountain bike traffic, hikers and hunters.  Have at it, frens!

Getting There Suggest change

Several parking options:

- Guerdat Road, at the south side of the park (same as “pink granite maze”)

- Guerdat Road, at the north side of the park - small pull-off with room for about 4 cars. Driving through the park on Guerdat Road between the parking lots is possible , but you’ll definitely want to be in a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle.

- Halfway between the north and south entrances to the 4x4 Guerdat Road is a small pull-off at the base of the CCC road and the “goat trail” mountain bike trail, with room for 2-3 vehicles.

- Northern end of Devaux Road’s unpaved forest road has a pull-off with room for 3-4 vehicles.  Please be respectful of neighboring houses if you park here.

Follow the various mountain bike trails, old CCC forest roads, and/or the blue+red blazed John Muir trail towards the northeastern quadrant of Walnut Mountain. There is some loose and mossy talus, use caution. Some climbs may be easier to approach from the top of the mountain and heading down, others are easier to access from the toe of the slope.

Check MTBproject.com or TrailForks for the most current map of mountain bike trails.  There are several bike trails and hunter trails that are marked with colored blazes, reflective pins, or survey tape, but are not mapped.  A map, compass, and/or GPS are your friend, as cell phone service is sparse.
