Description
Hole in The Rock road or BLM200 is a treacherous, yet typical desert dirt road. It begins out of Escalante and travels southeast towards the western shore of Lake Powell. This 62 mile long road is an out-and-back that drives primarily through the Grand Staircase with mulitple roads breaking off to the east and west. In addition to climbing, travelers venture here to hike the Hurricane Wash, Dance Hall Rock, Fortymile Gulch, Reflection Canyon, and numerous slot canyons. A majority of the road is in Grand Staircase-Ecalante National Monument, with the exception of the remaining 6 miles, which are within Glen Canyon. The road can get a little tough in areas, but is passable to high-clearance, two-wheel drive vehicles in dry weather only. The numerous side-roads that branch from Hole In The Rock road are only recommended for four-wheel drive vehicles. Most of these side roads with climbing head east and are in Glen Canyon or border it.
This area is reserved for unclassified and sparse areas with routes and boulders within the Glen Canyon National Reserve boundaries off of The Hole In The Rock Road. Littered with towers, monoliths, and sandy goodness, the climbing found along these battered lands can be only described as raw and wholesome.
