Description
Tucked under Bighorn Peak, at the head of Middle Tensleep Creek, is this surprising cirque. The walls above the Lost Twin Lakes are not visible from the highway, or even from most of the approach trail. But once you turn the last corner and climb the final few hundred feet to the lower lake, your jaw will drop.
More well-known to hikers and anglers, climbers have been visiting here since the 1970s or 80s. However, the documented climbing history of this area really begins in the 1990s, with Piana, Delannoy, Baradacco, and Tolle’s routes on Spiderweb Wall.
It is common practice for "the locals" to give routes here "bomb" ratings - whether or not they have ticked a given route - in order to discourage "outsiders".
Getting There
Park at the West Tensleep trailhead, register for your free wilderness permit at the trailhead, and hike up the trail, passing Mirror Lake and eventually finding lower Lost Twin Lake - about 6 miles.
There are scattered camping spots around the lower lake. The most popular are on the shelves above the lower lake to the left (northeast), or below the lake near it's outlet (north-northwest). Note that Forest Service regulations require you to pack out everything, including human waste. For more secluded and less regulated camping, stay farther downstream and at least 100 feet from trails and creeks.
