Description
One of the closest climbing areas to Calgary, Prairie Creek boasts an abundance of steep and hard sport routes on pocketed limestone. The cliffs face Northeast and are in the trees, meaning they are always in the shade and cool even on the hottest days. The routes can also can be damp and seep after rain so give it a few days of dry weather before heading out.
Getting There
From Calgary head through Bragg Creek via a variety of routes until on Highway 66. Drive West on Hwy 66 until you reach Elbow Falls and the seasonal gate. Just past the gate there is a pullout on the left with parking stalls. Alternatively another 50 meters further is the Powderface Trail parking lot with more parking.
From the parking area cross to the North side of the road and find the Prairie Creek trailhead (signed) and follow a nice maintained trail for about 35 minutes up and over a decent hill overlooking a pile of scree and a cliff band further on up high (this is the crag). From the top of this hill continue down the trail and pay attention for a side trail that branches off to the left into the trees. Take this branching trail through some dense foliage for a couple minutes until you come to a creek crossing. Cross the creek and continue following the trail now steeply uphill until you come up right to the face of the first crag (The Balcony) with the trail meets the rock. All other crags are further up the hill on the left. About 45 minutes total approach.
