Description

Horse Race Rapids is a scenic area along the Paint River in Iron County. The area is locally known for views of rapids and nearby rock formations. Aside from sightseers, kayakers and fishermen frequent the area, and trails are well developed along the north side of the river. South side access should continue to be explored. There appears to be vast bouldering potential along with shorter top rope/sport/trad route potential on either side of the river. The extent of the climbing potential within the area is/should still be explored.

Getting There

Horse Race Rapids is located 10 miles (16 minutes) from Crystal Falls, 11.5 miles (16 minutes) from Florence, and 26 miles (32 minutes) from Iron mountain. From Crystal falls, follow US 2 for 6 miles, then turn left onto County Airport Rd. Continue on County Airport road for 1.7 miles, then continue straight for 1.9 miles until reaching the trailhead of Horse Race Rapids. Signs along US 2 and on Horse Race Rapids Rd allow for easy access.
