Description
Just south of the actual Lake George village (toward the west side of the lake, not the east side trade routes by Shelving Rock), there's a great little mountain with a tourist-trap vibe with a memorial highway to the summit.
This is civilized desolation most of the year as the road is closed save the few cyclists that will pass...
The hiking trail skips most of the road-side areas altogether and the summit has plenty of opportunity.
Avoid the road-cuts completely in the summer and early fall season (or any time while the gate is open as even walking on the roadway is prohibited)...
Getting There
(In normal non-covid times):
The gate will close at 6 pm through early September; second Saturday in September through end of October and the first two weeks of November the gate will close at 5 pm. On the first, second Saturday, Sunday, and Veterans' Day Monday the gate will close at 3:30pm, Weather Permitting.
Update, July 2020
The gates are open, and the entrance fees are waived as the summit amenities are closed. Don't bring ropes during tourist season and be mindful that the staff to tourist ratio is way out of whack and they have in fact fenced off the entire summit with staff positioned to prevent hikers from accessing. The good news is that the Narrows vista boulder had plenty of parking and some shade near the Rattlesnake cobble trail.
