Description
This is the main course at the crag.
This wall is characterized by a 40-50 foot band of climbing on your typical granite per the South Platte. Then a drastic shift in quality happens in the upper tier where hydrology has carved and polished ergonomic holds onto a swath of creamy ice cream scooped granite above. Pegmatite bands running beneath the patina'd surface hold the occasional crystal pocket where you can find deep (albeit sometimes sharp) pockets that make some of the seemingly blank swaths of wall perfect for climbing. For the ultimate geology excursion, check out the classic "Prairie Fire", and see firsthand the science at play.
Routes here tend to be about 30m in length, thus a 60m rope is mandatory for all pitches (it is best to knot your ends).
Views from the chains are pretty spectacular, especially when marveling at the massive behemoth that is Pike's Peak. Trail Creek Road below receives a high volume of traffic with petrol-recreators, and it's quite common to hear the occasional "braaap" of dirtbikes and ATVs.
The wall sits in a SE-facing aspect and receives sun all morning until about 12-1pm. In the spring/summer months, it's best to wait till afternoon for climbing here. Climbing in the winter is quite possible as well, just the obvious inverse hours.
