Barren Mountain

Maine > i. Moose & Kennebec R…

Description

Remote undeveloped bouldering. No overnight camping in the preserve. I would say if you come here in the fall blaze orange is mandatory. You can find free camping along this road 45.369512, -69.437736 . I think the rock is some kind of metamorphosed shale/sandstone, it forms interesting edges and the texture is very fine, it seemed to be exceptionally hard. You can see some of the boulders on google maps. The slope faces death south so expect slightly warmer temperatures. The black flies here did not seem to care about deet.

Getting There

Some dirt roads 4WD not needed but reccomended. Use your GPS - entrance to the preserve is at 45.399100, -69.425597 on Mountain Road in Bodfish.
