Per Stewart M. Green: the North Cheyenne Canyon was reopened after the floods of 2015.
Per Stewart M. Green: ATTENTION!! The Colorado Springs Parks Department has CLOSED ALL CITY PARKS, including Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and North Cheyenne Canon, to rock climbing for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
This is due to record rainfall totals in western Colorado Springs which as caused severe trail and parking lot damage, saturated the sandstone cliffs, and is causing parts of cliffs to break off.
The parks will be re-evaluated on Monday to determine how the closure will last.
Please respect the closures and take care of our precious climbing areas!
Description
Buzzard Boulders are South-facing boulders hidden in plain sight right off Gold Camp Road. The area is far enough back that one can find solitude. A bike along the flat Gold Camp Road cuts the commute to 15 minutes. Walking will take around 45 minutes. The quality of the stone is generally good, is characterized by small chickenheads, patina, and crack, and differs distinctly from the variable rock down canyon. If you are lucky, you may see turkey vultures that like to frequent the area. The boulders tend to be on the lowball side, about 8-10 feet high, but there are a few that have great highball potential, and most of the landings are superb. There exists potential for ~50-75 problems in a small concentration of land. There is evidence that the area has been frequented by dirt bikers and also hooligans that like to dump their trash. This trash is only found in a small portion of the upper area. If you're going up there, you may consider bringing a small bag to collect trash to help beautify this area a bit. As always, any information as to the names, grades, and FAs is always appreciated.
Getting There
Take Cheyenne Canyon Road past Helen Hunt Falls to the top newly paved parking lot. This is where Cheyenne Canyon Road, Gold Camp Road, and High Drive form a four way intersection. Park here, and continue west along Gold Camp Road past the gate and vehicle closure either by foot or even better on bike for 2.5 miles. As you are nearing the boulders, you will encounter a big berm on the left and a cabin with a green roof on the right. Then a dirt bike trail will appear on the left with a 2'X2' boulder at its edge. The trail drops steeply east, and the boulders should be readily visible. Pictures are available on the main page for easy identification of the turnoff.
