Description
A little north of the village of Bellús is an unspectacular looking hillside with hog farms and an old quarry. Within a 20 minute approach, you'll find yourself at the crag which turns out to be unexpectedly tranquil considering the aforementioned farms. Tucked away is a secluded dry valley called the Barranco Fonda with a sunny, 1/2 km long south-facing wall consisting of solid limestone, and plastered in excellent and well-bolted routes! The routes tend to be ~15-20m, although they pack a fierce punch with steeper moves on the red sections and technical climbing on the grey sections. Barranco Fonda is a well-sheltered sun trap that's ideal during the colder winter days. There are no extreme overhangs so there's little climbing during a rain, although it does dry fast. Vertical and overhanging routes are in the sectors Verano, Bloque and Balcón. Technical slabs are in sector Escarcha negra.
To add to the attraction of the area, there is a shady crag known as Cueva Pechina, found over the back of the hillside, and can easily be visited on the same trip, especially if a respite from the heat is needed. Cueva Pechina (aka Cueva Petxina) has the steepest and hardest climbing at Bellús. Cueva Pechina offers shady climbing all day long and will give some dry climbing in light rain, albeit in the harder grades. Sector L'Altet is also shady with one wall of morning sunshine with short routes from 15-20m. The easiest routes of Altet are on the left side of Sol sector and the most difficult and interesting routes are in Estiu Desplom sector, an incredible wall with some tufas on it.
