Description Suggest change

Sandstone cave that has been uncovered from runoff to the lake. Lip of the cave is about 40 feet long end-to-end, and about 7 feet tall at its center. Area receives filtered sun through surrounding trees throughout the day. Holds remain wet and brittle for a day or so after it has rained. Despite it being a “pit” that needs frequent cleaning of holds - quality climbing can be found here. The Petrichor Pit is the only outdoor feature we could find within 1.5 hours of Kirksville. Treat it with love so future ATSU/Truman students & locals can use it. You’ll want a couple crash pads and ideally a spotter.

Getting There Suggest change

Drive toThousand Hills State Park - Turn down the one way loop. Park at the 1st playground (Before you see the lake), identify the white pipe that drains the play area, and follow the dirt trail just East (down the hill) from here. 2 min. Walk from parking lot.
