Blue Ridge Railway trail in Amherst Va holds what is called the Roses Mill Climbing area.
This trail is 8 miles in length, stretching from route 151 in Nelson on the West side to route 29 on the East side.

The climbing here varies from bouldering, sport and trad lines. The rock is of a quartzite type and pretty bomber. Climbing in this area holds a great atmosphere as you get to enjoy the sounds and smells of the Piney river flowing by the climbs. Please stay within the climbing areas listed here as access is allowed by Amherst Recreation and Parks and the Blue Ridge Rail Way Trail committee. Lets set a good example for climbing in the Amherst.
Also remember to sit down and enjoy the river along with all the beauty this area has to offer! Be safe and climb on!

Getting There Suggest change

From the town of Amherst head north on route 29. When you get to route 151 turn left. Proceed down route 151 for several miles until you see Athalone Ln on the right, across from the fuel station. Continue down Athalone Ln until it merges left into Roses Mill Rd. Conintue doe Roses Mill Rd and you will see the parking area on the right after several miles. To access the climbing area begin at the trail head off of Roses Mill Rd. You will then hike East on the trail, following the Tye River.
