Access Issue: Falcon Nesting Closure at Castle Rock
Details
Castle Rock in Pine Canyon and the Wanna Get Away areas are closed for peregrine falcon nesting season, from February 1 through July 31st every year. All other Mount Diablo area crags are open to climbing. The news release is linked here parks.ca.gov/NewsRelease/493.
Description
A secluded 30 m high dome of rock across the fire road (on the West side) compared most of the areas at Pine Canyon. The climbs are all on the north face and are mostly shady year-round.
This area seems to see a bit less climber traffic than the other Pine Canyon crags, despite being relatively close to the parking. Some of the rock is dirty and moss-covered as a result, but the area is home to several excellent and memorable moderate sport climbs featuring a variety of climbing styles.
Like most areas at Pine Canyon, there is often poison oak growing around the belay area and on the approach. Be careful.

Getting There
About 30 meters after the first sign about seasonal closures, right before the road turns left, look for a lightly beaten trail to the right up a gently sloping ravine. Follow this for about 250 m to get to the base. After about 50 m you should be able to see the large dome of rock, if not you're likely on the wrong trail. Some maps seem to call this "Buckeye Ravine Trail" but there isn't currently a sign for it.
