El Peñasco

California > San Diego County > N San Diego County > Rancho Penasquitos Ca…

Description

This is the namesake "small cliff" of Los Peñasquitos Canyon. It has a few routes worth putting up a TR. Go to J-tree or at least Woodson for real climbing, but this is worth doing if you are in the area and have a rope. These routes are only accessible during low water levels, so basically anytime besides winter. All routes use natural anchors, so bring some webbing to sling boulders and a few cams. You only need a 30m rope for the climbs but bring some long slings to extend those anchors.

Getting There

The routes are on the tallest cliff at the waterfall area at Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. It is on the south side of the creek. This area is accessible from a few spots. You can support your park (which you should do anyways) and pay the $3 to park at Black Mountain Rd and walk 3 miles, or you can park for free and see some goats if you park at the Los Peñasquitos Adobe near Canyonside Park. There are a bunch of other access points too, but any way you come be prepared to hike a few miles.
