Firetown Road

Connecticut > CT Bouldering

Description

A beautiful section of woodland located on a quiet road in West Granby. The area is part of the McLean Game Refuge, around 15 boulder problems have been uncovered here, ranging from V0 to V3+. It is possible their are more difficult problems around, but so far they have not been discovered. Most of the boulders are within a short walking distance from the road. The larger cliff face has been known about since at least 2012, as well as a few of the boulders. A few rope routes exist but the quality is pretty low, nothing has been bolted. Please be respectful of the house in close proximity to this location.

Getting There

The cliff face is located to the left of the house on 70 Firetown Road. No parking lot exists but it is not difficult to see the area once you walk into the woods.

[Hide Comment] Cool. This was part of my Granby bouldering circuit back when I first got my drivers license. I was just climbing v easys back then and didn't write down any specifics. Have fun exploring. Sep 16, 2019

[Hide Comment] Bryce, it's good to know Firetown wasn't completely unclimbed before we started developing the area this past spring/summer. I threw down the FAs with the information I have available to me, which is limited to myself and a few other locals. Most of the area is low in grade so it's an ideal spot for newer climbers in the area. Sep 16, 2019

[Hide Comment] Hey what’s the parking beta? Cool to just pull off the road? Oct 4, 2019

[Hide Comment] I was ok to pull off on the side of the road but there are some nearby hiking trails too, which would be more ideal Oct 4, 2019

[Hide Comment] You shouldn't have issues with the side of the road.

If you wanted to hit trail parking the Eddy Loop trail head is the closest designated parking area around 1.2 miles down the road, on google maps they call it "Parking and Trailhead - Mc Lean Refuge". None of the hiking trails from the Eddy Loop lead to the Firetown cliffs though, the road has best access. Oct 4, 2019
