Description
The Clyde Spires (13,240'+) are the twin peaks located behind (south of) Picture Peak. Their location is mis-marked on some maps - they are actually about 1/4 mile west from there. The West "spire" is the higher of the two by a couple feet, but the East Spire is the attractive one from a climber's perspective. The Spires feature two nice-looking climbs - the North Arete (III 5.10a Swanson/Schnieder 1990) and the North Couloir (III AI2 Easy 5th). Depending on your preference and/or basecamp location, two different class-4 scrambles serve as the descent routes - (1) the West Ridge towards Mt Wallace and down a scree slope back towards the base or (2) the South Ridge then heading east to Echo Col and down to Echo Lake.
Getting There
Approximately 8 miles from the trailhead at Lake Sabrina. Follow the trail towards Hungry Packer Lake as per Picture Peak. From Hungry Packer Lake, hike up the ridge on the left side which leads towards Picture Peak, and contour around its eastern flank into the bowl behind (same as the descent route from the technical climbs on Picture Peak). Allow 4-6 hours to the base depending on your fitness and pack weight.
