Description Suggest change

Don’t get eaten by the critters … Death by Wildlife is a single pitch formation located just past the northwestern boundary of Staunton State Park. The wall faces southwest but has shade and rain shelter available at the base. The currently developed climbing is primarily bolted, but a light rack (small to medium-sized gear) is necessary for some of the mixed climbs.

Getting There Suggest change

From the entrance/visitor center, continue driving up the road for a couple miles following the signs to the Lazy V Parking Lot (2022 upper parking lot). It is about a 2 mile hike or bike to the climbs. From the Lazy V Parking Lot, follow the trail system uphill to gain the Staunton Ranch Trail. [Current 2022 trail alignment: exit Lazy V lot at NW and follow Lazy V trail for about 200 yards, follow dirt access road W for about 100 feet to cross creek, ***,  follow Old Mill trail uphill/north for about 200 yards to reach Staunton Ranch trail]

From the Staunton Ranch and Old Mill trail intersection, follow Staunton Ranch west for 1.3 miles to the intersection of Border Line and Bugling Elk trails. Keep heading uphill on Bugling Elk (actually dirt access road), exit the current State Park boundary (old signs), and continue to the top of the saddle on the Bugling Elk Trail for about 1/10th mile. Just after the crest of the saddle, leave the trail/road and hike northwest for about a quarter mile (new trail being built in this area) for a gradual elevation gain. There are two large rock outcroppings with large caves/tunnels at the base. Death by Wildlife is the western outcrop, slightly uphill.

*** As of 2022, it is still allowed to hike/bike the slightly more direct dirt access road uphill from the Lazy V lot rather than using the Staunton Ranch trail, but this access might change in the future.

If the Lazy V Parking Lot is closed or full, it is about a 4 mile hike from the Meadow Parking lot. From the Meadow Parking lot, hike or bike 1.8 miles along the Staunton Ranch trail to the intersection of Old Mill and Staunton Ranch. Then follow directions provided above.
