Description
One of the best climbing destinatons in Brazil. Endless Inselbergs (Gneiss mountains) spread along the semi-arid land. High quality rock. Dry weather, sunny and windy for most of the year. The climbing season is all year round, being June/July the dry season with a desert scenario, and December/January the rainy season, with a greeny landscape. Even in this period is possible to clmb everyday, as the rock dries fast.
All kinds of routes, Sport, Trad, Multipitch, etc. from 50ft to 1500ft long (15m to 450m). Two of the fifty brazilian classic climbs are in Itatim.
Getting There
Itatim is a small city located at northeast Brazil (Bahia State), only 125 miles (200km) from the capital city Salvador.
The easiest way is to take a flight to Salvador (SSA), then the metro to the bus station (Rodoviária), and a bus to Itatim (Camurujipe bus company). Or you can rent a car in Salvador and drive towards Itatim.
Lodging options: Abrigo de Montanha de Itatim @abrigodemontanha_itatim, Sítio Trad Friends @tradfriends (both just a few meters from Morro da Toca Inselberg) or Abrigo Rocaia @abrigorocaia (near another rock formation). Camping or rooms.
If you want a hotel room with AC, there are several basic hotels in Itatim. As of April 2024, the Buriti Hotel was the newest. A basic room with AC costs about $20US/night.
