The Cauca department is located on the southwestern corner of Colombia. Most of its territory is on the Andean mountains, though it extends to the Pacific coast to the West, and a tiny portion of the Amazon Basin on the SouthEastern tip.
The Colombian Massif, is a mountainous group covering Cauca, Nariño and Huila departments. The Colombian Massif is a strategic national and international level, given its significance for water production, biodiversity and ecosystems. It is also an area with a huge potential for crag development, mostly on igneous and sedimentary rock associated to volcanic activities (Sotará, Puracé, Coconucos Volcanic Range, to name a few). The dramatic landscape of the Caucan Andes is characterized by deep, steep canyons, and tall waterfalls, and small villages.

This Area takes Cauca´s capital city Popayán (250k population) as the starting point to climbing subareas. Popayán is the largest and better communicated town between Cali and Pasto. It has an airport served by Avianca (Guillermo León Valencia Airport), but could be very expensive to flight from Bogotá. A better option is to get to Cali (flight, car or bus), and then go south for about 140 km (2 hrs) . There's excellent public transportation between Cali (northbound) and Pasto (southbound), and the road is on excellent conditions (2 tolls, COP8300 each by JAN2019).
