Description Suggest change

Concealed from view from any road or trail, this newly developed crag hides perched on an exceptionally scenic ridgline overlooking Coon Creek and the South Fork Trinity watershed (the confluence of which has fantastic deep water soloing). You can even see clear to the Horse Mountain radio towers. The rock is identical to much of Marble Caves, making it a very special addition to the offerings of Underwood Mountain. The cliff is south and west facing and dries off very quickly, minus a few pockets that seep briefly after heavy rains. There are plentiful tufas, pockets, and all the limestone features we love. It is an excellent destination on it’s own and also a great alternative when the Arêtes are too crowded or too cold. Wildlife is very abundant in the area with common sightings of grouse, quail, deer, and a symphony of frogs and chirping birds. All of the routes have been equped with stainless steel lower off biners for convenience and being only five minutes before the Aretes and a 12 minute hike, there is no reason not to check it out.

Getting There Suggest change

1.25 hours from Arcata. Drive HW 299 for 60.6 miles to Underwood Mountain Road (5N60). From the east, it will be ~40 miles from downtown Weaverville. Reset your odometer once you pull off 299. At 4.0 miles, turn right on 5N40 and make sure to stay left where 5N27 comes in. At 4.9 miles, take a right on a short road and park at the culdesac.

Find a trail heading west from the culdesac. After 100’ the trail goes a little hidden as it rounds the right side of a seasonal pond/depression. The trail picks up and is very clear from the opposite side of the depression. The trail takes you up to the ridge due west of the car. The crag is on the other side of the ridge.
