Description
It is one of the two major trad climbing destinations in Korea, the other being the Bukhan Mountain in Seoul.
Climbs in Seorak Mountain retain the adventurous nature, offering a variety of climbs on granitic walls. Ulsan-bawi is a beautiful chunk of granite with many trad routes, Jang-gun-bong and Miruk-Jang-gun-bong provides a mix of technical slab and face climbing on near vertical walls, and Juk-byuk (red wall) offers challenging climbs on an overhanging terrain. There are numerous classic ridges like Chunwha-dae, Yoo-Sun-Dae, and Dol-jan-chi that offer great views as well as awesome climbing on immaculate granite.
This area is open for rock climbing from mid May through late Octoboer. You need to acquire a climbing permit in advance for any climbing trip you wish to make, by filling out a form and sending in to the Seorak National Park Service(seoraksan1708@hanmail.net).
Getting There
If you're bringing a car, you can use the Shin-Heung Temple parking lot. It takes about 2.5 hours from Seoul, depending on the traffic. If using public transportation, you can take an express bus from Seoul to Sok-cho bus terminal, then take a local bus 7 or 7-1 to Seorak Mountain national park. Approach from the parking lot will typically take 1 to 1.5 hours depending on your climbing destination.
