Description
An obscure area that is perhaps a better hiking than climbing destination. The canyon/gorge terminates at Illilouette Falls which is a great hike for those looking for solitude.
Getting There
Park as for Glacier Point. Start at Happy Isles but instead of taking the Mist Trail, go south at the Nature Center which is just west of the Merced River. Follow the service road all the way back until you hit a water tank. From the south end of the water tank find a faint climbers trail going up through the woods. Follow this uphill a long ways, staying west of Illilouette creek. At a point where it opens up - look southeast and identify the large rock scar high on the wall that forms a giant corner. This is directly below Panorama Point. The two routes are under this rock scar. Scramble down and cross the river/stream aiming directly for the wall. The approach is not obvious, allow over an hour.
