Description
Hubble Wall is the bulbous west-facing wall below Lizardhead. Located exactly a half-mile northwest of Chimney Rock, this 200-foot wall looms above motorists heading up Dry Creek Road toward the Devils Bridge turnoff. There is a smorgasbord of parallel cracks, but very few of them are actually worth climbing. The select routes that have been established here are intended as mellow outings for local climbers, given the short (20-30 min) approach, imperfect stone, and relaxed "patio crag" atmosphere.
Getting There
Park at one of the many pullouts along Dry Creek Road just south of the turnoff for the popular Dry Creek Vista Trailhead. The ideal pullouts to use are those between Cinnabar Road and Garnet Hill Road. Anyhow, make your way on foot to the Y-junction between Lower and Upper Lizardhead trails. Start heading southeast on the Upper trail. In a few hundred yards, an unmarked yet fairly obvious trail branches off uphill in a slabby gully (look for an old gnarled juniper that marks the turnoff. This trail is very well defined in its path through minor cliffbands to the upper plateau. If you stick to it, you will find yourself at the base of Hubble Wall about 20-30 mins since leaving your vehicle. The limestone band is surmounted by traversing left a couple hundred yards to an easy (class 2) weakness.
